 Powder actuated fastening systems provide a cost
effective method of attaching fixtures for light duty, static load conditions. They are
designed for concrete and steel, but not for hard or brittle materials such as cast iron,
tile, glass, or rock. The system consists of specially designed fasteners, installation
tools, and powder loads. Powder actuated fasteners should be installed by properly trained
and licensed operators as described in ANSI Standard A 10.3.All installation tools sold today are low
velocity; standard or high velocity tools operating on the direct acting principle are no
longer sold, although some loads are still available.
Cased powder loads are available in
sizes ranging from .22 to .27 caliber. The power level or strength of a cased powder load
is identified using a 12 level system in which a combination of six color codes and six
case types are used, as follows:
